Out of Left Field brings you the popular and fringe culture podcast, 5282, concentrating on Music, Film and Television.
Each episode we explore a general topic such as 'Were The Beatles a folk band?', or discuss a particular creative, such as Annette Peacock. Once a month, we produce a recommendations episode containing material you may have heard of and much you've never come across. No remote region of creativity is overlooked as hosts Kevin Petch, Rob Wood, Phil Todd and David Benn explore culture through the 1950's to the early 1980's.

Plus everything after then.

And most of what happened back to... well, pretty much the end of the Younger Dryas.

Plus the occasional guest interview and performance.

We dedicate this page to William Astbury, who started this journey with us, but sadly passed away in 2024.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Pop Stars In Films
Published: Monday, February 24, 2025
Popular musicians and vaudeville acts were obvious choices for early filmmakers. By the 50's the studio system was ready to hoover up any rock and roll talent, presenting a deluge of 'jukebox' films. How did the phenonium of music stars turning into film stars develop from there? Kevin and Dave talk about Pop Stars In Films, looking at success, failure and of course some left field fringe examples.

Mulholland Drive
Published: Wednesday, February 19, 2025
When considering features for series three or four, Kevin suggested 'Is Mulholland Drive the best film of the 21st century so far', following on from a BBC poll.

Listen until the end to get our take, while taking in three Yorkshiremen grappling with what on earth Mulholland Drive is about. Dave thinks it probably is not a dream but does not get round to explaining that. Very fitting.

Saturday Night Live Stars

Saturday Night Live is 50 this year. In the US it's stars are household names, and many have gone on to have impactful film careers. In this full feature episode Kevin, Rob and Dave discuss some of the most famous names SNL has featured, although we are not convinced everything they touch is gold. Or even brass.

Bonus Feature 7. Outtakes
15th January 2025 - 0 comments
Outtakes (Bonus Episode)
Last year we put together an outtakes bonus episode featuring Kevin, Bill and Dave. It took time, we think for obvious reasons, to finish the edit. So starting 2025 looking forward to more 5282 episodes, here's a look back revealing Bills vocal talents, Dave's obsession with aircraft and Kevin's groovy side.
For the quiz questions Dave is indebted to the internet, Brian Cox (but which one?) and Paul Sinah's Perfect Pub Quiz.
And just to let you know, this feature contains strong language and allegations our lawyers would like to point out are possibly unfounded.

Bong Joon-Ho and Red Light Bandit
Published: Monday, December 30, 2024
In the last episode for 2024 we discuss the films of Bong Joon-Ho and the recent Blu-ray release of Red Light Bandit.

Joon-Ho probably came to western attention with Snowpiercer, his end of the world on a super train movie. Then in 2019 Parasite received four Oscars, in what some people saw as a tough field. But did we? And a quick warning, when discussing Parasite we do give away vital plot elements.

Red Light Bandit is an altogether more radical offering. Cornerstone of the radical underground Cinema Marginal movement, this subversive and fast paced action drama comedy sci-fi recently had a much needed Blu-ray release.

Kevin and Dave are again joined by Phil Todd.

Ah, Christmas, when ones mind turns to Norman Bates. Or at least it does if you are Rob Wood. In this episode he recommends some slightly alternative Christmas films. Kevin has two bites at the cherry with top albums and top films of 2024, and Dave puts in a word for Chasing With Connor and the protomolecule.

More seasonal than a mince pie and full of festive cheer we have finally cracked this recommendations business.

Published: Monday, December 16, 2024
Did you grow up in Britain in the 1970's? Were you exposed to highly inappropriate programmes and books, which have left you scarred for life? No this is not another look at video nasties, but the phenomenon of Hauntology. We discuss it's origin, possible meaning and look at just a very small number of extraordinarily weird TV and books adults thought would improve young minds.

Crime Films of the 1970's
Published: Monday, December 2, 2024
Derelict British warehouses, seedy New Jersey bars, the cornfields of Kansas. All haunts of tough guys and embittered cops. Any minute a car chase or gunfight or bout of very British swearing might break out. In this episode Kevin and Rob pick their favourite crime films of the 70's, but it's a rich decade and we can't cover everything. In our bonus episode 4b we wrap things up, but do we nail Mr Big?
